President George H.W. Bush
(1989-1993)
Background: Bush became President in 1989 and served as the 41st President of the United States. He also served as a Vice President, congressman and ambassador. After graduating from Yale in 1948, Bush entered the oil business and became a millionaire at the age of 40. Shortly after becoming involoved with his oil company, he introduced himself into politics as a member of the House of Representatives. He then became Ronald Reagan's Vice President and the following President of the United States.
Actions in Early 1990s:
June 11, 1990- Bush declares that the United States and Mexico will become involved in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
June 25, 1990- Bush meets with Nelson Mandela
June 27, 1990- Announces the agreements and goals of NAFTA
July 5, 1990- Bush meets with NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) to establish new ideas to expand NATO. This allows the Soviet Union to accept German membership in NATO which ultimately fixes German reunification and trade obstacles.
July 23, 1990- George Bush nominates David Souter to become the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court
July 26, 1990- Bush signs the Americans with Disabilities Act which prohibits discrimination based on disability
August 8, 1990- Bush sends United States troops to protect Saudi Arabia
November 15, 1990- Bush signs the Clean Air Act Amendments which prohibited the use of leaded gasoline in cars to prevent air pollution
January 16, 1991- Bush orders the Operation Desert Storm to be entact
February 23,1991- Bush directs Schwarzkopf to use ground forces against Iraq
July 8, 1991- Bush nominates Clarence Thomas as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court
July 31, 1991- Bush and Gorbachev sign the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty which reduced nuclear power between the nations
October 30, 1991- Middle East Peace Conference is head in Spain which is directed by Bush
November 21, 1991- Bush signs the Civil Rights Act of 1991 which gives the right to trial by jury on discrimination
November 3, 1992- Bush loses his second term election
December 4, 1992- Bush leads the nation through Operation Restore Hope in Somalia
December 17, 1992- North American Free Trade Agreement is signed between the United States, Mexico and Canada
January 3, 1993- Bush signs the START II treaty to prevent nuclear warfare
