March 18th, 1990 - The largest art theft in U.S. history occurs in Boston, Massachusetts, when two thieves posing as policemen stole twelve paintings worth an estimated $100-200 million from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. As of 2005, the painting had not been recovered.
August 2nd, 1990- The Gulf war begins after Saddam Hussein accuses Kuwait of stealing oil from Iraq. Iraq invades Kuwait and the US sends half a million soldiers to defend Saudi Arabia against invasion.
April 24th, 1990 - The Hubble Telescope is placed into orbit by the United States Space Shuttle Discovery. One month later, the telescope became operational.
February 11th, 1990- South African antiapartheid activist, Nelson Mandela is freed after spending 27 years as a political prisoner.
February 27th, 1991 - The Gulf War ends one day after Iraq withdraws its forces from Kuwait and sets the oil fields on fire. A ceasefire is declared and Iraq accepts the condition of disarmament after one hundred hours of ground fighting.
December, 1991- The Soviet Union collapses and the 15 separate republics (including Russia) are now independent. In result, World maps will never look the same again.
May 5th, 1992 - The 27th Amendment to the Constitution is passed two hundred and two years after its initial proposal. It bars the United States Congress from giving itself a midterm or retroactive pay raise.
November 3rd, 1992 - In a three way race for the presidency of the United States, Democratic candidate Bill Clinton defeated President George H.W. Bush and businessman H. Ross Perot of the Reform Party.
February 26th, 1993 - The World Trade Center was bombed by Islamic terrorists when a van parked below the North Tower of the structure exploded. Six people were killed and over one thousand were injured.
November 30th, 1993 - The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act is signed into law by President Bill Clinton.
January 1st, 1994 - The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) goes into effect, creating a free trade zone between Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
September 13th, 1994 - President Bill Clinton signs the Assault Weapons Ban, which bars the use of these weapons for ten years.
April 27th, 1994- In the very first South African election in which black people are allowed to vote, Nelson Mandela is elected president. He is the first black South African president.
April 19th, 1995 - Oklahoma City bombing kills 168 and wounds 800. The bombing is the worst domestic terrorist incident in U.S. history thus far, and the investigation resulted in the arrests of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols
1995 - Retired professional football player O. J. Simpson is acquitted of two charges of first-degree murder in the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman. The trial, which lasts nine months, receives worldwide publicity.
June 25th, 1996 - Khobar Towers bombing leaves 19 U.S. servicemen dead in Saudi Arabia

January 26th, 1998 - The Monica Lewinsky scandal begins when U.S. President Bill Clinton denies his relationship with the White House intern in a televised interview. This denial, and other denials to a grand jury investigation, would lead to the impeachment of the president.
April 20th, 1999 - Two teenage students murder 13 other students and teachers at Columbine High School. It is the deadliest mass murder at a high school in U.S. history, and sparks debates on gun control and bullying.
1999 - Along with the rest of the world, the U.S. prepares for the possible effects of the Y2K bug in computers, which was feared to cause computers to become inoperable and wreak havoc.
